Improve Your Dental Care For Your New Year's Resolution

As 2015 comes to a close and the New Year rings in, people always announce their plan to improve their lifestyle via resolutions. Dental care should be a regular habit with proper care supported all year long. But sometimes we do need a few reminders on the best practices of good oral care. For that reason, we want to provide some "dental resolutions" to have a brighter smile in the new year.

Eat Plenty of Fruits and Vegetables

Sugary foods can cause premature loss of tooth enamel that results in a weakening the structures of your teeth. Eating a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables (such as apples, carrots, celery and also legumes) is a solid recommendation. These foods are full of valuable antioxidants and nutrients that help your body (most notably your mouth) fight off bacteria and infection.

It is also recommended to limit your sugar consumption by drinking less carbonated beverages and drinking more water by drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day. The proper amount of water consumption can help fight cavities, keep teeth clean and wash away sugary residue.

Limit Your Alcohol Intake

Simply put: Red wine can stain teeth. However, immediately following the wine with a glass of water or brushing your teeth gives the wine less time to sit and stain your pearly whites. Excessive alcohol intake can also lead to gum recession (periodontal pocketing), and there is an increased chance of weakening in the teeth.

Quit Smoking or Using Other Tobacco Products

Smoking (and other related tobacco products) can lead to serious health complications, such as cavities, gum disease and recession, tooth discoloration, as well as cancers of the lung and throat and oral cancer.

Brush at Least Twice a Day and Floss at Least Once a Day

Proper brushing and flossing protects teeth from several things: gum disease, tooth decay and plaque, which is a sticky and invisible film that is made up of harmful bacteria that builds up on teeth daily. Without regular brushing and oral care, teeth and gums can suffer from bleeding in the mouth, gingivitis and the build up of disease.

See Your Dentist for Regular Checkups

It is important to see your dentist at least twice a year to take a proactive stance and prevent dental issues. Regular visits help to monitor proper oral health as well as make recommendations for a dental health regimen that addresses any potential areas of concern.
