The Pain behind TMD

10/26/2016

It starts out like every other day. The alarm clock goes off, you wake up, rub the sleep out of your eyes, and then you feel a yawn coming on. You open up your mouth and then you feel a shot of pain.

It is in a very specific location, too. You can feel right above your back molar near your cheekbone. Whatever could this be?

Pain behind TMD

TMD: Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

Connecting the jaw bone near the back of the cheekbone is the small temporomandibular joint. This tiny disc acts as a cushion between the bones and allows the joint to move smoothly.

At times, this joint can become inflamed, which negatively affects the movement and overall comfort of the person.

TMD Symptoms

TMD Symptoms include:

  • Swelling on the side of the face
  • Lockjaw
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Clicking or popping sounds when moving mouth

What Causes TMD?

Causes for TMD vary. It can be an issue with the disc itself or the entire structure of how the jaw sets.

Other possible TMD causes include:

  • Arthritis
  • Bruxism, or teeth grinding
  • TMJ disc movement

Normally, TMD goes away on it own. However, if you are experiencing prolonged bouts of TMD, it can be a serious problem of the overall jaw. It may require oral surgery.
