When Does a Patient Require Dental Implants?
Dental implants are a prosthetic teeth that are anchored into the jawbone to act as replacement roots for a missing tooth. They are designed to match and work as well as a patient's natural teeth, improving comfort, speech, ease of eating and overall appearance. Dental implants are durable fixtures that can help to upgrade overall health by providing a durable and permanent alternative to dentures or bridges. If taken care of properly, dental implants can last a lifetime.
In order to be eligible for dental implant surgery, a patient’s gums and bone structure should be healthy enough to support the dental procedure. A small, titanium based post is implanted into the gum line as the new replacement root, being inserted into the bone socket area of where the tooth used to be. Once inserted, the dental implant takes an average of two to three months for the jaw to fully heal and secure the implant permanently within the jaw. Once the implant has been affixed to the jawbone, a small abutment connector post is attached to ensure that the new tooth will hold. Your dentist will adjust/fit the tooth's bite range and then fit the tooth with a crown.
